Update 1: As of March 23rd, 2016, Dell has released an update for the WiFi driver here. This update seems to fix many of the WiFi-related problems that plagued my experience with the laptop earlier. In its current state, I have few remaining issues with the XPS 15 and would increase the rating to 4/5.
Issues: FHD backlight bleed. Red-cast when viewed from extreme angles. Reports of bad ghosting on both displays, but especially on FHD. These are not a result of the panels response times or the IGZO technology (which should, in theory, be faster than regular IPS panels) but seem to be the result of a manufacturing defect. If you notice ghosting on your display, the display is NOT working as it should and you should RMA it. I have compared my screen side by side with the IGZO IPS display of the Razer Blade, as well as an IPS monitor with a 5ms advertised response time. There was no visible difference between the three displays.
It is a glass Microsoft Precision Touchpad coated with a soft-touch material, using Synaptics technology but the Microsoft drivers. Thus, customization is extremely limited as you only get the basics Precision Touchpad settings offered by Windows. As it is a clickpad, without buttons, the ability to configure no-touch/tap zones would have been welcome. It is possible to install the Synaptics drivers through a hack, but it never gets quite the same level of functionality as a regular Synaptics device.
If they can get AHCI to work/fix the RAID speeds of the NVME, clear up some of the TB3 port bugs, and get their act together with their 33 card drivers, then I suspect that the XPS 15 would have much fewer issues.
My first XPS 9550 (late November 2015) was return for repairs regarding the headphone jack so they didn't have any sound card or the daughterboard in stock so because of my Country's law they sent me a brand new one instead of a refurbished one. My first unit was plague with issues Bluetooth issues, BSOD and sound issues. I notice the Network adapter was switched from a Dell801 to a Killer1535 Wireless Adapter. I haven't had a BSOD yet nor have I had sound and BTooth problem with any of my devices. The only thing I'm still getting from this unit that I had with the other is the fact that there are still 3 Drivers that keep popping up to be updated when they have already been downloaded and installed. They keep asking to install in my dell account and Dell Assist. These drivers are the new BIOS 1.2.16 A13, also the Chipset/ Intel Management Engine Components Installer and third the Docks/Stands/ ASMedia USB 3.0 Extended Host Controller Driver. So I don't know what to make of this at the moment but I'm just waiting for a fix. I haven't got reply from Dell regarding this. It's only been two weeks since I got my new unit( November 28/16)
I confirm the bottom line of this article. My XPS15, my 6th Dell laptop since 1994, which I received a month ago has been my worst experience: LAN, USB, Bluetooth disconnects, sudden shutdowns and many memory dumps clogging the C:\windows directory, printer randomly seen or not, etc .. Of course all drivers are uptodate and all possible sanity checks have been performed.
After 48 hours of researching and fiddling I figured I would return it so I did a fresh reinstall/reset formatted everything. Decided to set the machine up one more time before returning and for whatever reason (with the exact same drivers it had before the reinstall) the wifi now works flawlessly.
Yup, youre right, the 9560 would have a FHD monitor and 56 Whr battery compared to the 84Whr on my touchscreen model, but I've read that the non touch would still have longer battery life regardless of its smaller battery, do you know if this is true?
The Service Processor monitors the operation of the firmware during the boot process, and also monitors the hypervisor for termination. The hypervisor monitors the Service Processor and will perform a reset/reload if it detects the loss of the Service Processor. If the reset/reload does not correct the problem with the Service Processor, the hypervisor will notify the operating system and the operating system can take appropriate action, including calling for service.
PCI extended error handling (EEH)-enabled adapters respond to a special data packet generated from the affected PCI slot hardware by calling system firmware, which will examine the affected bus, allow the device driver to reset it, and continue without a system reboot. For Linux , EEH support extends to the majority of frequently used devices, although some third-party PCI devices may not provide native EEH support.
The Service Processor supports surveillance of the connection to the HMC and to the system firmware (hypervisor). It also provides several remote power control options, environmental monitoring, reset, restart, remote maintenance, and diagnostic functions, including console mirroring. The Service Processors menus (ASMI) can be accessed concurrently with system operation, allowing nondisruptive abilities to change system default parameters.
